JCrew's older, chic-er, more expensive sister, Madewell, has tons of items listed for final sale.

Roaring Twenties Tank
The Brownstone Bag

Sale items run the gamut - wool hats and mittens, wool jackets, shoes, boots, dresses, sweaters and floaty tops. In other words, you can wear sale items now AND later.

But, buyer beware. . .no returns on final sale items.

Beauty Deals in Unexpected Places

You never know when you'll find a beauty deal, especially in unexpected places.

On a recent Sunday, the Diva and I were killing time while we waited to pick up Roo from a birthday party. We decided to go to Borders for coffee - Seattle's Best - and book browsing since, like her mommy, she is the girl who loved books. After hot chocolate - with whipped cream of course - and a latté, we took a look around and found some significant markdowns on Paperchase merchandise. And, voilá!

Marked down from $9.99 to 98¢. What a steal! Lip balm for the winter in yummy flavors and colors.

Sweet!

White Sale Mania

January and February mean white sales. You can take advantage of deep discounts on both sheets, comforters, blankets, bedding, towels and more. I love the idea of huge savings on goods, but keep in mind that prices may have been inflated from the start.

I've already ordered a featherbed and sheet set from Macy's (the featherbed is no longer on sale). Even if the prices were too high to begin with, I FEEL like I'm saving big. Both were a steal and qualified for free shipping. Saved me a trip to the mall, fighting the crowds and digging through piles of merchandise. Always a good thing.

If you're buying sheets, keep in mind that anything over 230-thread count is basically the same. No need to buy mega-thread count. It's more important to buy quality fabric such as Egyptian or Turkish cotton.

Some other retailers conducting white sales:

Garnet Hill
Target
Pottery Barn
Shop.com
JCPenney
Crate and Barrel

It's best to buy now; selection will go down the closer we get to President's Day.

Good luck!

12 Days of Christmas Crafts - Day 12

The 12th day of the 12 Days of Christmas Crafts. I have to admit it's a bit of a relief; I need to move on to other Christmas preparations. It's another knitting project. Very crafty, quick and it makes a great gift.

Simple Mohair Scarf
A skein of mohair yarn
Size 15 needles
Finished size 4" x 72"

Cast on 16 stitches (or the number needed to make the scarf your desired witdth).
Knit every row until you reach the desired length.
It's a light and airy scarf you can wear any time of year.

That's it. Really easy.

Don't forget - the parade of cookies starts tomorrow.

12 Days of Christmas Crafts - Day 10

Today's craft is an origami ninja star. Doesn't sound very Christmas-y does it? No judgement until you see it.

The Diva - she's the origami expert - and I used a lightweight wrapping paper of silver snowflakes. Trés thrifty.

You need 2 sheets of 6" x 6" paper. Don't go smaller, it will be nearly impossible to fold. Go bigger if you like, though; just make sure your sheets are square.

We used instructions from The Joy of Origami, by Margaret Van Sicklen.

Carefully fold your first sheet:

Time for the second sheet:

Now it's time to put both of the pieces together:

Word to the wise - take your time and follow the instructions to a T. Even the experienced origami girl had to try this a couple of times.

The end result:

Fun to tuck into the branches of the tree, string into a garland or use as a tag on a gift.

My apologies that some of the photos are blurry and the colors are inconsistent. Argh.
