Founded in 1982 in an old building near the Ann Arbor farmers' market, it's become a local institution. Lucky for me, Hubby's brother lives just outside of Ann Arbor and I go to Zingerman's every time we visit. Now I can go to Zingerman's online day or night.
Theirs is really an amazing story. As their business grew, the founders, Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig, faced the choice of expanding or continuing the deli as it already existed. They made the right choice and gave their employees the opportunity to spin businesses off of the deli under the Zingerman's name. Now the brand boasts a bakehouse, creamery, restaurant, coffee roastery, candy, catering, and food tours, founded and run by managing partners.
They also offer a training course - Zing Train - in-depth sessions which share Zingerman's management and business philosophy. We know people who've been to the course and come back thoroughly inspired.
Items appear a bit pricey, but the quality and portion sizes make a purchase worthwhile. For his birthday one year, I ordered a reuben sandwich kit for Hubby. After you look at the price, you may think, "Is she crazy?! That's not thrifty at all!" It is indeed pricey, but Hubby got two hearty portions out of the kit. And, I think he'd agree that it's one of the best gifts he's ever received.
If you're new to Zingerman's, start with staff favorites for a quick tour of their offerings. Some of our favorites include:
Paesano Bread |
Mo's Bacon Bar is divine. When I first became acquainted with Vosges Haut-chocolat, I thought it sounded disgusting. But it's REALLY good. If you like the sweet smoky taste of bacon dipped in maple syrup, you'll love this chocolate bar. Seriously.
Oh, Zingerman's, how I love thee.
